MALIBU, Calif. - A strong defensive effort resulted in the third consecutive shutout for the Pepperdine women's soccer team, but the Waves and #21 Arizona State battled to a 0-0 draw on Sunday at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.

The Waves (6-3-2) outshot the Sun Devils (6-2-2) by a 14-11 count, but both teams put on a good defensive showing and greatly limited the other's scoring opportunities. Pepperdine put only three shots on goal, while ASU had only two.

"Shutouts are what we're after, and that was a great defensive effort," Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said. "ASU is really good. We knew they were coming off a loss on Friday and that they would be hungry. They had the upper hand early but we responded well. The game kind of see-sawed from there. I never thought we were going to lose, and I thought we might be able to sneak a goal at the end. It was a good soccer game."

The best scoring chances may have all come in the first half. In the eighth minute, Pepperdine sophomore forward Lindsey Holman-Kelley (San Diego, Calif./The Bishop's School/Wake Forest) took a shot from distance that ASU goalkeeper Alyssa Gilmore had to tip over the bar. In the 33rd minute, junior defender Myriah Stockman (Sandy, Utah/Brighton HS) began a run from her left back position and kept going, all the way into the box, but her shot was deflected away by Gilmore. Freshman midfielder Gunny Jonsdottir (Gardabaer, Iceland) followed with a header but hit the ball high.

Toward the end of the first half, ASU had its best opportunities. In the 37th minute, Karin Volpe got into the box on a counterattack and had a chance, but Pepperdine sophomore goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) came out of her net and was able to knock the ball off Volpe's feet moments before she could get a shot off. In the 45th minute, Jill Shoquist had a point-blank shot from inside the box, but Barker made a diving save.

The shot count lessened as the game went on during a hot, sunny day, and no shots on goal were recorded by either team after halftime.

The shutout was Pepperdine's fifth of the season. The Waves have conceded only three goals in the last seven games.

Pepperdine, which is 4-0-2 at home this season, now heads out on the road for its next five matches. The first trip is a contest at #15 UCLA on Friday (Oct. 1) at 5 p.m.
