#18 Women's Soccer Pounds UC Irvine, 4-0
Sept. 14, 2012
Amanda LeCave scored twice to add to her league-leading total and senior forward Anisa Guajardo had a goal and two assists as the #18 Pepperdine women's soccer team pounded UC Irvine, 4-0, on Friday night in the first match of the UCLA Soccer Classic.
The Waves improved to 6-2-0 on the season and will face #3 UCLA on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Drake Stadium. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Network and a free live audio broadcast will be available at www.pepperdinesports.com.
Pepperdine enjoyed a 15-6 edge in shots and senior goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) needed to make only two saves to earn her second shutout of the season.
The Waves only led 1-0 at halftime. Guajardo (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS) set up sophomore forward Lynn Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) for a breakaway in the 26th minute, and Williams' shot was deflected into the net for her third goal of the season.
Guajardo set up LeCave (Windsor, Calif./Windsor HS) for the Waves' second goal too. Her through ball gave LeCave room to score in the 63rd minute. Then, just a little more than a minute later, Guajardo got on the scoreboard for the fifth time this season when she headed in a corner kick from junior defender Michelle Pao (Cupertino, Calif./Monte Vista HS).
LeCave began the day with seven goals, leading all West Coast Conference players and ranking sixth nationally. She added her ninth tally of the season in just the eighth game when she took a pass from sophomore defender Micaela Cervantes (San Diego, Calif./Mission Bay HS) and curled a shot into the goal in the 73rd minute.
UC Irvine fell to 3-6-0 on the season. This equaled the most lopsided victory in the series history (which the Waves now lead 8-4-2), with Pepperdine also winning 4-0 at home in 1999.
