No. 10 Waves Fall in Close 1-0 Contest at Arizona State
TEMPE, Ariz.- Despite No. 10 Pepperdine's offensive onslaught, the Waves were unable to overcome a second half goal by Arizona State, falling 1-0 in the Sun Devil Desert Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
The Waves (5-2-0) outshot the Sun Devils 19 to 13, and were led by sophomore forward Lynn Williams(Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) with seven shots, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
The Sun Devils (2-4-1) got on the board in the 63rd minute, taking advantage of a counter attack off a Roxanne Barker(Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) goal kick to get the eventual game-winning goal.
The Waves wasted no time going on the offensive, as Anisa Guajardo (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS), Amanda LeCave(Windsor, Calif./Windsor HS) and Williams each had cracks at the goal in the first seven minutes.
However, Arizona State also had their chances, as Barker was forced to make a save in the third minute off a shot by Holland Crook.
In the 32nd minute the Waves had an excellent scoring opportunity as Williams launched a shot, but Sun Devil goalkeeper Chandler Morris was able to get there and make the save to keep the score 0-0.
In the first half the Waves outshot the Sun Devils 7-6 and Barker was forced to make two saves. The Waves had four corners, including two in the final five minutes of the half, but either team found the back of the net and the score was tied 0-0.
In the second half the Sun Devils got on the board in the 63rd minute, however, as Devin Marshall ficked a header over Barker into the goal on a counter attack. Cali Farquharson had the assist for the Sun Devils.
In the 66th minute Barker came up with a big save on a header from ASU's Farquharson keep the Waves within one.
The Waves followed with two corner kick opportunities and in the final 10 minutes the Waves were fighting for the equalizer, launching three shots during the period, but were unable to come up with the tying score.
Overall the Waves outshot the Sun Devils 19-13, but Arizona State was more effective with their shots, having six on goal to the Waves' two. Barker finished the game with five saves, whereas Morris finished with two for the Sun Devils.
Along with Williams, Gallanes, Guajardo, LeCave and Mandy Davis(Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) all had multi-shot outings.
Barker, Guajardo and defender Michelle Pao (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS) were named to the All-Tournament team.
Next up for the Waves is the UCLA Tournament, beginning Friday, Sept. 14, against UC Irvine at 4 p.m. PT in Westwood.
