Berkeley, Calif. - Forward Anisa Guajardo came out of the gates strong for Pepperdine, netting two goals in a 2-1 victory over California at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Calif. on Friday afternoon, getting the Waves off to winning ways in 2011.

The Waves (1-0-0) won their season opener for the third year in a row and the seventh time in the last eight seasons.

The Waves and the Bears (0-1-0) played a close first half, with the squad amassing five shots on goal and two corners, while Cal had eight shots and three corners. The Waves had a quality chance in the first half, off a cross from Myriah Stockman (Sandy, Utah/Brighton HS) to Michelle Manning (Calabasas, Calif./Agoura HS) on a header that just barely missed the back of the net. The teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.

"I thought we spent the first 15 minutes or so really just finding our legs and lungs and we weathered the storm a bit, but we were able to find our rhythm halfway through the first half, yielding some really great moments. We really started to play our brand of soccer," head coach Tim Ward said.

With the senior leadership taking charge at halftime, the squad got off to a fast start in the second half. In the 50th minute, defender Michelle Pao (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS) served in a long set piece which was flicked on by Manning to a crashing Guajardo (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS), who found the back of the net to give the Waves the 1-0 lead.

The Waves didn't sit back on the lead, and in the 83rd minute, freshman Amanda LeCave (Windsor, Calif./Windsor HS) fed a great ball to Guajardo, who went 1v1 with her defender, putting away her second goal of the game and giving the Waves a 2-0 lead.

"I thought it really was just an excellent 1v1 finish by Anisa. I am really happy for her," Ward explained.

Cal, playing down on their home field, continued to push and in the 86th minute got behind the Waves' back line with a pass that found the feet of forward Lauren Battung, who deposited the ball in the lower left corner of the goal, just past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS).

However, the squad's veteran defense held steady, preserving the 2-1 for the Waves.

"Cal is an excellent team and I think this was a very nice soccer game to watch, as both sides were trying to play the game right, with a lot of possession," Ward said. "This is a great win and a great way to start off the 2011 season. Of course it is just one game, but with our difficult schedule, anytime we can get a win we will take it."

Guajardo's two goals give her 10 for her career and two on the young season. In the assists category, Manning added her fifth career assist, Pao her second and LeCave her first. Barker made four saves and is 1-0 on the season in the net.

Along with LeCave seeing her first collegiate action, forward Lynn Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) started for the Waves in her first collegiate match, taking one shot on goal in 66 minutes of action.

The Waves return home to Tari Frahm Rokus Field on Sunday (Aug. 21) for their home opener against another Pac-12 opponent, Arizona, at 1 p.m. PT.
