BOULDER CITY, Nev. Â The Pepperdine women’s golf is tied for first place after one round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, while freshman Lisa McCloskey fired a 5-under 67 to put her into a tie for second place.
Play continues at the par-72 Boulder Creek Golf Club with single rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct. 28-29). The Waves are tied for first with Louisville after both teams carded an 8-under 280. The score of 8-under marks the third-best round in school history.
“We really played great,” Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. “We had three players with bogey-free rounds, and that’s really cool. I’m really proud of them. The thing that stood out is how well they struck the ball. Everyone hit a lot of greens. Once they were on the green, then they made some putts, and didn’t have to put a lot of pressure on themselves. Finally, we had a day where the whole team played fabulous. This is what this team is capable of because it’s a talented group.”
The Waves and the Cardinals lead host UNLV and fifth-ranked Oklahoma State by two shots.
The 5-under 67 by McCloskey (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery HS) ties as the ninth-best round in school history. She was flawless, recording three birdies on the front nine and two more on the back nine and didn’t have a single bogey. McCloskey is three shots back of Lee Lopez of Long Beach State, who had a 64.
She wasn’t the only one to have a mistake-free round. Freshman Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) had a 3-under 69 that had zero bogies and three birdies. She moved into a tie for eighth place.
Senior Jayvie Agojo (Bangkal, Philippines) was the third member of the team to go without a miscue and finish under par, as she ended up with a 1-under 71, good for a tie for 17th place. She was remarkably consistent, recording 17 pars and a birdie on the 13th hole.
Sophomore Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) is tied for 36th with a 1-over 73, freshman Jessica Wallace (Langley, B.C./Walnut Grove Secondary) is tied for 52nd at 74 and freshman Kiara Hayashida (Lima, Peru/Heritage Academy) is tied for 76th at 77. Wallace is playing as an individual.
