South Africa - Former Pepperdine All-American Carolina Llano and current senior All-American Eileen Vargas combined to shoot 8-under par to lead Colombia to a third place finish at the World Amateur Golf Championships that concluded Saturday at the De Zalze Golf Club in South Africa. Each country was represented by a three-player team with the best two scores counting each round in the 72-hole event.

Llano carded a final-round 6-under 66 while Vargas, shot a 2-under par 70 to give Colombia a combined final round score of 136. It marked the lowest final round in the history of the Championship.

Llano tied for fifth individually with a 72-hole score of 4-under par 284 while Vargas tied for seventh at 3-under par 285.

South Africa won the Espirito Santo Trophy with a final score of 10-under 566 after winning a tie-breaker over Sweden, which also finished regulation at 10-under 566. Colombia was one shot back at 9-under par 567 after beginning the day 13 shots behind South Africa.

In 2002, the bi-annual event was held in Malaysia and the Australian team led by former Pepperdine All-Americans Katherine Hull and Lindsay Wright were 13 shots back after the first round and came back to win.

Pepperdine also was represented in the tournament by junior Stephanie Gelleni, who was playing for Venezuela, and former Wave Macri Arenas, who was part of the team from Guatemala.

Complete results of the tournament can be viewed at www.golfstat.com.

Vargas and Gelleni will be back in the line-up for Pepperdine next week when the Waves travel to Henderson, Nevada to compete in the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown October 30th - November 1st.
