ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Â It’s shaping up as a two-team race between the Pepperdine women’s golf team and host New Mexico at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, as the two schools are tied for the lead after Friday’s second round.
The third and final round will be held on Saturday (Sept. 20) at the par-73 University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course. The Waves began Friday with a two-stroke lead over the Lobos, but New Mexico fired a 1-under 291 on its home course and Pepperdine shot a 1-over 293, giving both a 1-over 585 for the tournament. The third-place team, UC Davis, is nine strokes back at 594.
Pepperdine senior Jayvie Agojo (Bangkal, Philippines) began the round as the individual leader but despite her second straight 2-under 71, she slipped into second place. New Mexico’s Jodi Ewart leads the tournament with a 5-under 141 and Agojo is one stroke back with a 4-under 142.
Freshman Lisa McCloskey (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery HS) had another solid round, shooting her second straight even-par 73. She is tied for sixth place at 146. She had a consistent round with 16 pars on the day.
Sophomore Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy), a returning All-American, was two strokes better than Thursday’s opening round, notching an even-par 73 to move into a tie for 11th place at a 2-over 148 (75-73).
Three other freshmen who are competing in their first collegiate tournament are within two shots of each other. Jessica Wallace (Langley, B.C./Walnut Grove Secondary) is tied for 25th at 151 (73-78), while Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and Kiara Hayashida (Lima, Peru/Heritage Academy) are both tied for 35th at 153. Drolson has shot 77-76 and Hayashida, who is playing as an individual, went 80-73.
Agojo, Karle and McCloskey all birdied the 18th hole to get back to par, or in Agojo’s case, better. There were fewer birdies and bogies all around on Friday. Agojo, Karle and Hayashida each had three birdies, while Wallace and McCloskey each had one.
“We were really happy with today,” Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. “Everybody hit the ball really well today. We didn’t have as many putts fall as we wanted on the front but we played pretty solid on the back. We’ll be ready to go tomorrow and are looking forward to a great final round.”
This is the first tournament of the fall for Pepperdine.
