Pepperdine Men's And Women's Golf Teams Earn Preseason National Top 20 Rankings

Aug. 31, 2004

The Pepperdine men's and women's golf teams each earned national Top 20 preseason rankings by Golfweek Magazine for the upcoming 2004-05 season. The men are ranked No. 17 while the women earned a No. 18 ranking. Pepperdine is one of 13 schools to be ranked in both the men's and women's Top 20 polls, joining Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Duke, Georgia, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Texas, UNLV, USC and Washington. Defending national champion UCLA earned the No. 1 spot in the women's poll and is followed by Georgia, Duke, Southern California and Oklahoma State. Pepperdine finished No. 26 in the final 2004 Golfweek poll after winning the WCC title and advancing the NCAA Regional Championships. Twelfth-year head Laurie Gibbs welcomes back her entire roster from a year ago and has added three solid recruits to the program. The Waves are led by junior All-American Carolina Llano. Llano posted a career-low stroke average of 73.53 in 30 rounds and was No. 16 in the final Golfstat national rankings. She also was No. 8 in score versus par. Llano twice captured individual medalist honors, registering victories at the NCAA Fall Preview Tournament at The Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama, and the WCC Championships at Riverbend Golf Club in Madera, California. In the men's poll, Florida, which tied for sixth at last year's NCAA Championships, gained the top spot and is followed by Georgia, Clemson, Arizona State and Oklahoma State. The Pepperdine men's team concluded the 2003-04 campaign with a No. 25 national ranking after winning the West Coast Conference (WCC) Championship and placing 10th at the NCAA Championships at The Cascades Course in Hot Springs, Virginia. The Waves are led by senior All-American Michael Putnam, who finished fourth at the 2004 NCAA Championships and captured the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship in early August. The women's team begins their 2004-05 season on September 13 when it opens play in the three-day Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational Tournament at The Championships Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The men's season gets underway on September 17 when it begins play at the UCLA Gold Rush Intercollegiate at the SCPGA Golf Course in Beaumont, California. GOLFWEEK WOMEN'S PRESEASON TOP 20
