Women's Golf Announces 2012-13 Schedule
July 18, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - After her young team made it back to the 2012 NCAA Championships, Pepperdine women's golf coach Laurie Gibbs expects that the squad's experience will lead to even better things during the 2012-13 season. Gibbs, heading into her 20th season, announced the team's schedule today.
Though the Waves won't have any seniors on the roster, they will have back four of the five players that competed in the postseason, led by two-time All-American and two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS). The junior finished with national rankings of #45 by Golfstat and #47 by Golfweek/Sagarin last season.
Junior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) and sophomores Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) all received All-WCC first team status last season. Ching was the WCC Freshman of the Year and ranked #66 by Golfstat and #74 by Golfweek/Sagarin.
"We are excited about our 2012-13 tournament schedule, which will include many of the top tournaments in the country," said Gibbs, who earned a share of her 11th WCC Coach of the Year honor last season. "Our roster will still be young with no seniors, but the players have the experience to compete against the top-ranked teams in the country and we look forward to a very successful year."
Junior Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) also returns from last season, while highly touted freshman Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) joins the squad.
For the second straight year, the Bruin Wave Invitational, co-hosted by Pepperdine and UCLA, will be played at the nearby championship course at El Caballero Country Club, located in Tarzana, Calif. This will be the fourth time overall that the event has been held.
The Waves will play in the following eight regular-season events:
Sept. 17-18 -- Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational (UNM Championship GC/Albuquerque, N.M.)
The Waves will be looking for their 12th consecutive WCC championship at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., from April 15-17. NCAA Regionals will be hosted by Stanford, Oklahoma and Auburn on May 19-11, while the NCAA Championships will be May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
