July 10, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. - A 13th consecutive West Coast Conference title and the team's 12th trip to the NCAA Championships are among the goals for the Pepperdine women's golf team in 2013-14, as head coach Laurie Gibbs announced the team's schedule today.
Six of the Waves' eight regular-season tournaments are repeats of last year, including the fifth annual Bruin Wave Invitational, co-hosted by Pepperdine and UCLA at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif., on March 3-4. Five teams that were ranked in the top 15 at the end of last season will compete: defending NCAA champion USC, UCLA, Arizona, Oklahoma State and Washington. In addition, the Waves will be making first-ever appearances at events hosted by Oklahoma and UC Irvine.
"With all of our players returning plus two incoming freshmen, we look forward to having a great year," said Gibbs, who will be in her 21st season at Pepperdine. "Our schedule will have us competing against the top teams in the country, which will help us prepare for postseason. These tournaments will have some of the strongest fields anywhere."
In the fall, the Waves head to the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational (hosted by New Mexico/Albuquerque, N.M./University of New Mexico Championship Course), the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Wolcott, Colo./Red Sky Golf Club), the University of Oklahoma Invitational (Norman, Okla./Belmar Golf Club) and the Stanford Intercollegiate (Palo Alto, Calif./Stanford Golf Course). The Waves won the Golfweek Conference Challenge last year.
In the spring, Pepperdine competes in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge (hosted by Ohio State/Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Golf Club), the UC Irvine Invitational (Santa Ana, Calif./Santa Ana Country Club), the Bruin Wave Invitational and the `Anuenue Spring Break Classic (hosted by Hawaii/Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii/Kapalua Bay Course).
The WCC Championships will be contested at a site yet to be determined on April 14-16. NCAA Regionals, set for May 8-10, will be hosted by Florida State, Oklahoma State and Washington. The NCAA Championships will be May 20-23 at Tulsa (Okla.) Country Club.
Three-time All-American Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) returns for her senior season after a spectacular junior campaign. She earned All-American first team honors from both Golfweek and the WGCA, finished #8 in the final Golfstat rankings and #9 by Golfweek/Sagarin, and set the school's single-season scoring record (72.17 strokes per round). She also holds Pepperdine's career scoring record (73.31).
The Waves also return three other 2013 All-WCC first teamers in senior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand), junior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and sophomore Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS). Senior Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) and junior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) are two more veterans back. The Waves will also add two incoming freshmen, Alessandra Arza (Asuncion, Paraguay/Asuncion Christian Academy) and Andrea Unson (Manilla, Phillippines/Walkersville Christian).
