Women's Golf Begins NCAA Championships

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Pepperdine freshman Lisa McCloskey opened up the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships on Tuesday with a 2-over 74, putting her into a tie for 12th place. As a team, the Waves are tied for 17th place.

McCloskey (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery HS), the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, had three birdies during her round. She is two shots out of third place and four strokes back of the leaders. Only two individuals shot sub-par scores during the first round at the par-72 Caves Valley Golf Club.

The Waves shot a 312 as a team and are tied with Tulane. Pepperdine is just seven shots away from 10th place with three rounds still to be played between Wednesday and Friday (May 20-22). Denver leads the tournament after a 294.

For Wednesday’s second round, the Waves will again be partnered with UT-Chattanooga and Georgia, and they will tee off between 1:20 p.m. and 2 p.m. ET.

Besides McCloskey, the rest of the Waves are bunched up together. Sophomore Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) and freshman Jessica Wallace (Langley, B.C./Walnut Grove Secondary) shot 79s and are tied for 79th place. Senior Jayvie Agojo (Bangkal, Phillippines) and freshman Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) shot 80s and are tied for 91st place.

Karle had three birdies, Wallace had two and Drolson had one.

The Waves are making their ninth NCAA Championships appearance in the last 11 years, with a program-best finish of second place in 2003.
