Waves Dominate WCC Women's Golf Preseason Picks
Feb. 5, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine's women's golfers made up half of the 10-member All-West Coast Conference preseason team, as voted on by the league's coaches. The Waves are also favored to win their 13th consecutive conference title.
Senior Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS), a three-time WCC Player of the Year, is joined by fellow senior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College), juniors Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) and Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and sophomore Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS).
Na and Cheng are on pace to become the ninth and 10th players in Pepperdine history to earn All-WCC first team honors all four years. Ching has made the first team twice, while Chow and Lee have both made it once.
Chow (#5 Golfstat/#9 Golfweek/Sagarin), Na (#16 Golfstat/#22 Golfweek/Sagarin) and Ching (#90 Golfstat/#74 Golfweek/Sagarin) are the three highest-ranked players in the conference.
The Waves have won 15 of the 17 championships ever contested in the WCC. In the preseason poll, they received all four first-place votes from the other league coaches.
The preseason poll went as follows: Pepperdine, Gonzaga, San Francisco, Santa Clara and BYU. Joining the five Waves on the preseason All-WCC team were Lea Garner (BYU), Alice Kim (Gonzaga), Emelie Lundstrom (San Francisco), Kaci McCartan (Santa Clara) and Raychelle Santos (Gonzaga).
The WCC Championships will be contested at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., on April 14-16.
Pepperdine, which won two tournaments in the fall and enters the spring ranked sixth nationally by Golfweek/Sagarin and #11 by Golfstat, competes at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge beginning Sunday and running through Tuesday (Feb. 9-11).
