Women's Golf Opens Up 22-Shot Lead at Golfweek Conference Challenge
Sept. 24, 2013
WOLCOTT, Colo. - The Pepperdine women's golf team is one step closer to its second victory in the first week of competition, as the Waves have opened up a 22-stroke lead after Tuesday's second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The Waves have posted an 8-over 585 (289-296) over the first two days at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club. Behind them are UC Davis (607) and East Tennessee State (609). The third and final round is on Wednesday.
Pepperdine won the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational in New Mexico on Saturday, then immediately traveled to Colorado for this event. The Waves last opened a season with two victories in fall 2009 (also winning the McGuire and Golfweek events, though in reverse order). The first and only other time it's happened was in fall 2005.
The Waves, ranked 15th by Golfweek, have been in the lead after each of their five rounds this season. Pepperdine had a 12-shot lead after Monday's first round.
This is the fifth year that the Golfweek Conference Challenge has been held, and the Waves are looking for their third win. Pepperdine won the inaugural event in 2009 and also won last season.
Sophomore Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) and senior Grace Na (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) sit 1-2 in the individual standings. Chow leads with a 3-under 141 (71-70) and Na is a shot back with a 2-under 142 (71-71). The individual title looks to be a battle between the two teammates, as the third-place golfer is back at 146. It would be the first time the Waves have had the medalist at the Golfweek event.
Chow had a remarkable nine birdies during her round on Tuesday en route to a 2-under 70. Six of them came on the front nine and she added three birdies on her final five holes.
Na had five birdies on the first 12 holes and was at 5-under before the tougher back nine forced her to finish with a 1-under 71.
Junior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) is tied for seventh place at 149 (71-78), junior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is tied for 14th place at 153 (76-77) and senior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) is tied for 45th at 160 (81-79). Lee had three birdies and Ching had two on Wednesday. Cheng finished her round with 10 straight pars.
