Women's Golf Takes Big First-Round Lead at Golfweek Event
Sept. 23, 2013
WOLCOTT, Colo. - Two days after winning the Dick McGuire Invitational in New Mexico, the Pepperdine's women's golf team continued its strong start to the season as the Waves opened a 12-stroke lead after the first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Monday.
Three Waves are tied for first place individually, as senior Grace Na (Denver, Colo./Overland HS), junior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and sophomore Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) all shot 1-under 71s. They helped the Waves to a 1-over 289 at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club, 12 shots better than TCU and 14 fewer than Denver.
The Waves, ranked 15th in the nation by Golfweek, are looking to repeat as champions at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. They've won the event two of the four years that the event has been held, including the inaugural tournament in 2009.
Pepperdine is also looking to win back-to-back events to start a season for the first time since the fall of 2009, when the Waves won both the McGuire and the Golfweek event (but in reverse order).
Na, Ching and Chow each recorded four birdies on the day. All three of them were sitting on even-par heading into the final hole, and all three birdied the par-5 18th.
Junior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is tied for 14th place after a 76. She got off to a tremendous start, going 4-under after birdies on five of her first eight holes, but had some trouble on the back nine. Senior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) is tied for 49th after an 81. She posted two birdies.
