PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's golf team made some progress during the second round of the NCAA West Regional on Friday, but will need a big finish on Saturday in order to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

The Waves began the day in 17th place and moved up into a tie for 13th place. They'll need to make another big jump during Saturday's third and final round at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course, as only the top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships.

Four of Pepperdine's five players posted an improved second-round score, and that resulted in a four-shot improvement by the Waves, who have a total of 602 (303-299). Right now the eighth-place team is Georgia with 595 strokes.

The Waves are tied with Texas A&M. On Saturday, the Waves will be part of the afternoon wave, pairing up with the Aggies and San Jose State and teeing off #1 beginning at noon. The top 12 teams will play in the morning.

Junior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College) is the Waves' top player on the leaderboard. She's tied for 40th place with a 7-over 149 (75-74). Junior Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) had the Waves' best round of the day, a 2-over 73, which moved her up more than 20 spots and into a tie for 46th place at 150 (77-73).

Freshman Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) is tied for 51st at 151 (74-77), sophomore Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) is tied for 59th at 152 (77-75) and sophomore Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is tied for 84th at 156 (79-77).

Cheng and Ching each had two birdies on Friday.

Pepperdine is aiming to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the 12th time in 15 years. They'll be held at the University of Georgia Golf Course from May 21-24.
