Na, Ching On Verge of Leading Women's Golf to 12th Straight WCC Title
April 16, 2013
Grace Na and Alina Ching will be dueling for the individual title.
The Waves entered the day with a five-stroke lead and extended the advantage to 17 shots over second-place Gonzaga. Pepperdine shot a 1-over 289 on Tuesday at the par-72 Gold Mountain Golf Club and has a two-day total of a 6-over 582 (293-289). Gonzaga has a total of 599.
The third and final round is on Wednesday, with the Waves, Bulldogs and Brigham Young teeing off the #1 hole beginning at 9 a.m.
Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) was the first-round leader and stayed in front after her second straight 2-under 70. With a 4-under 140, Na is within striking distance of the WCC Championships 54-hole record of 8-under, set by Pepperdine's Carolina Llano in 2003. Na also won the WCC title as a freshman in 2011 and is looking to become the first two-time winner since the Waves' Jayvie Agogo was victorious in 2006 and 2009.
Na had a total of six birdies on Tuesday (and has a tournament-high 10), including three straight on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes.
Na's primary competition on Wednesday looks to be Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School), who had the best round of any golfer on Tuesday with a 3-under 69. That moved her from fourth place to second place, two strokes behind Na with a 2-under 142 (73-69). Ching had five birdies during her round and has eight over the two days.
In third place is Gonzaga's Raychelle Santos, who is four shots behind Na.
Four Waves are in the top six, with freshman Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) in fifth place at 149 (72-77) and junior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College) tied for sixth place at 151 (78-73).
Sophomore Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is tied for 16th place at 160 (78-82).
Pepperdine has won 14 of the 16 WCC Championships ever contested. The average margin of victory over the current 11-year winning streak has been 25.5 strokes.
