Women's Golf Finishes Third at Farms Invitational
April 2, 2013
Liv Cheng led the Waves' players with a career-best tie for fourth place.
The Waves were tied for third place after the first and second rounds and settled for third with a total of 904 (303-301-300) at the par-72 Farms Golf Club. The two teams that finished ahead of Pepperdine - USC and Arizona - are ranked in the top 10 by Golfstat. The Waves, ranked 31st, beat three top 30 teams: Texas, Northwestern and Texas A&M.
Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College) recorded the seventh top 10 finish of her career and her second in a row. Her tie for fourth place was a personal best, beating her tie for sixth at the 2011 Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. Cheng shot a 5-over 221 (73-73-75).
She wasn't the only Wave to finish strong. Freshman Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) tied for 10th place with an 8-over 224 (75-74-75), her third consecutive top 10 result.
Junior Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) had the best round of the day for the Waves, an even-par 72, and that allowed her to continue a remarkable streak. She entered the final round tied for 39th place but moved all the way to a tie for 19th at 228 (79-77-72), the 21st time in 25 career tournaments she placed in the top 20.
Also in the lineup, sophomore Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) tied for 26th place at 231 (76-77-78) and junior Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) was 64th at 248 (84-80-84). Competing as an individual, sophomore Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) tied for 31st at 233 (77-77-79).
The Waves will next be aiming for their 12th consecutive West Coast Conference championship when the conference event is held April 15-17 at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
