Na Second, Waves Third at UC Irvine Invitational
Feb. 25, 2014
SANTA ANA, Calif. - Grace Na took second place and the Pepperdine women's golf team finished third at the UC Irvine Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday.
The Waves began the day in third and almost surpassed Texas A&M for second place, but the Aggies held on by two strokes at the par-72 Santa Ana County Club. Pepperdine had its best round of the three on Tuesday, a 1-under 287, and for the tournament shot a 15-over 879 (298-294-287). Stanford won with an even-par 864.
Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) began the day tied for third place and six shots back of the eventual winner, Mariah Stackhouse. She made things interesting, closing the gap to just two strokes at the end. Na, a three-time All-American and West Coast Conference Player of the Year, finished with a 2-under 214 (74-69-71). She had three birdies on her first four holes today.
In her Pepperdine career, Na now has 31 below-par rounds (#2 all-time), 17 top 10 finishes (#7) and 26 top 20 results (#7). It was her third top-five finish of the season (she was medalist at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in the fall).
Three other Waves placed in the top 20. Senior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) tied for eighth place with a 2-over 218 (72-73-73), sophomore Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) tied for 13th at 223 (76-75-72) and junior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) tied for 20th at 227 (79-77-71). Lee had four birdies and Cheng and Chow each had three.
Junior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) tied for 39th at 234 (76-77-81).
Pepperdine co-hosts the Bruin Wave Invitational with UCLA next week (Monday and Tuesday, March 3-4) at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif.
