Dec. 21, 2006

Final Stats

MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine may have suffered an even bigger loss than the 64-53 set back handed out by San Diego State Thursday night as the team's leading scorer Daphanie Kennedy had to be taken to the hospital when she suffered an apparent head injury with 14 minutes to play in the second half.

Pepperdine (7-6) was trailing 38-36 at the time of the injury.

Freshman Miranda Ayim led Pepperdine with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor. Jessica Ross had 13.

San Diego State (6-3) led wire-to-wire after Jennifer Layton recorded the game's opening basket. She would finish the night with 15 total points.

SDSU led by as many as 11 on two occasions in the first half, the last with 2:43 remaining. But Pepperdine would close out the half with an 8-2 run and trailed by just five at the break, 32-27.

Ross would bury a trey to open the second half and after Ayim made true on a layup the game was tied at 32-all.

Pepperdine was never able to take the lead although the game remained tight until the waning minutes when San Diego State iced the victory with free throws.

Shanna Demus scored a game-high 20 points, Quenese Davis had 13 for the Aztecs.

Kennedy finished the night with five points in 24 minutes.

The Waves will be off until December 28 when it hosts Rhode Island at 7 p.m. in Malibu, Calif.
