Faulty Outside Shooting Cost Pepperdine In 84-41 Loss At Illinois

The Pepperdine Waves shot a season-low 1-for-20 at the 3-point line and committed 22 turnovers as the Fighting Illini cruised to an 84-41 at Assembly Hall in Champaign, Ill. Center Shannon Mayberry was the only Waves player who scored in double figures as she tipped in 10 points. Jennifer Lacy grabbed a season-high seven boards and added eight points. Illinois' Tiffanie Guthrie nearly walked away with a triple-double posting 18 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists.
With the Waves third straight loss, Pepperdine drops to 2-4 on the season while the Illinois improves to 4-4.
The Illini jumped out to a early lead on the Waves as they gained an early double-digit lead and never looked back. Illinois had it going on the defensive end in the first half forcing 13 turnovers and led 36-18 at the break. In the second half the Illini were too much for the Waves as they shot 59 percent from the field and scored 48 in the half to secure the 84-41 victory.
Illini forced 22 turnovers for the game, pressuring the Waves out of the game. Illinois edged Pepperdine on the boards 44-to-42. Pepperdine was a team that died by the three-point shot in this game, going 1 for 20 for the game. In a day where it couldn't miss a shot, Illinois went 30-61 (49 percent) from the field and 5-9 from deep.
The Waves must quickly regroup as they face Michigan State Wednesday and then turn around and host Florida State, TCU, and Fairleigh Dickinson at the 2003 Malibu Beach Classic.
