MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine Women’s Basketball Head Coach Ryan Weisenberg rounded out the incoming class when he announced this week that Olivia Ogwumike will be joining the Waves for the 2014-15 season.
Ogwumike, a 5-11 forward, hails from Cypress, Texas and is the sister of current WNBA players and former Stanford standouts Chiney and Nneka Ogwumike.
"We are excited about Olivia joining the Pepperdine family. She has had a very successful high school and AAU basketball career,” said Weisenberg. “We know that she brings a passion and excitement to our program that is second to none.”
Ogwumike played both basketball and volleyball at Cypress Woods High, helping the Wildcats reach the 5-A Region III basketball final last year. Ogwumike played four varsity basketball seasons and three varsity volleyball seasons at Cy Woods.
As a senior, she helped the team to a 32-6 record and scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the regional semifinal game to help propel the Wildcats the final. Ogwumike averaged 8.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game as a senior and posted a career average of 7.2 points and 6.7 rebounds. Cy Woods had two 30-win seasons during her tenure and compiled a total of 117 wins in her four years.
As a three-year volleyball standout, Ogwumike posted a total of 277 kills and 115 total blocks. She decided to concentrate solely on basketball as a senior.
“Olivia is a very athletic post and wing player,” said Weisenberg. “She is very versatile and will be a defensive nightmare for the WCC opponents. Her defense is what we are most excited about. Olivia can defend every position on the floor and will be our defensive stopper for the 2014-15 season.”
Ogwumike joins a three-player freshman class that already includes 6-3 center Devin Stanback and 5-10 guard Kim Jacobs. With Jacobs and Stanback both being local products, Ogwumike is the only out of state freshman entering the program.
