Former Wave Ayim Helps Canadian National Team Secure Berth in the 2012 London Olympics

MALIBU, Calif. - Former Wave Miranda Ayim and the Canadian Senior Women's National Team qualified for the 2012 London Olympics after winning a winner takes all game over Japan, 71-63, on Sunday afternoon in Ankara, Turkey in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament. The berth marks the first time the Canadian women have been in the Olympics since 2000 in Sydney.

After falling to Croatia on Friday, the Canadians had to win two-straight games to win the Olympic berth. On Saturday they defeated Argentina 58-41 to advance to play Japan today, with a chance at the Olympics on the line.

Ayim (London, Ontario, Canada/Saunders Secondary) played 19 minutes in the victory, collecting two points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal as the Canadians pulled out to an early lead and were able to stave off a late run by the Japanese in the final quarter, where they pulled within three, winning 71-63.

Canada has been placed in Group B in the London Olympics, with, Australia, Brazil, Great Britain, France and Russia. The 2012 London Olympics women`s basketball event will take place from July 28 - August 11.

Ayim had one of the top careers in Pepperdine from 2006-10, setting the school career record for blocked shots with 182 and finishing eighth in career scoring (1,377) and rebounding (735). She was a three-time All-WCC selection on the court, and was equally impressive in the classroom, becoming the first Waves women's basketball player to be a three-time WCC All-Academic selection.
