Women's Basketball: Pepperdine Falls to Howard 55-51
Dec. 21, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine played its final game before breaking for the Christmas holiday and dropped a disappointing 55-51 non-conference decision to Howard Friday afternoon at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves (3-7) simply could not contain Saadia Doyle who scored a game-high 25 points for the Lady Bison (5-5) in the first meeting between the two teams.
Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) scored a team-high 13 points for the Waves to go along with five rebounds, four assists and no turnovers in 38 minutes. Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) chipped in 11 points and four rebounds.
Trailing 25-20, Pepperdine used a 10-2 run to take a 30-27 lead into the intermission. The Waves built a six point lead, 44-38 with 10:06 remaining in regulation on a 3-pointer by Kelsey Patrick (Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak HS), but the Lady Bison rolled from there, outscoring Pepperdine 17-6.
Pepperdine shot .395 (17-43) from the floor, but sizzled from beyond the arc, connecting on a season-high .700 (7-10). Howard hit at a chilly .268 (15-56), including a .167 (2-12) rate from long distance. The game was won at the free throw line and the Lady Bison shot .767 (23-30) from the stripe led by Doyle, who went 15-of-18. Howard entered the game shooting just .608 from the foul line in 2012-13.
Howard won the battle of the boards 38-34, but owned the offensive glass 18-8. The Lady Bison outscored Pepperdine 22-6 in the paint and scored 19 points off 22 turnovers.
Pepperdine closes its four-game homestand Friday, December 28 when it hosts No. 12/16 UCLA. Tip-off against the Bruins is set for 5:00 p.m. and is the first game of a doubleheader with the Waves men’s squad who hosts Fresno Pacific at 7:30 p.m. at Firestone Fieldhouse. Both games will be streamed live on PepperdineSports.com via WaveCasts.
