Women's Hoops Fall to No. 2 Stanford
PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team suffered a 99-50 loss to No. 2 ranked Stanford on Thursday evening, in Maples Pavilion.
Rebounds and shooting hurt the Waves (3-1) as they went 33-51 to the Cardinal (3-0) on rebounds and shot 25 percent to Stanford's 64 percent. Pepperdine went 64 percent on free throws, shooting 7-of-11 to the Cardinal's 62 percent. Stanford's Kayla Pederson was the game high-scorer with 22 points, while Miranda Ayim (London, Ontario, Canada) led the Wave offense with 14 points, three steals and six rebounds.
The first half saw an aggressive Pepperdine team trading baskets with the Cardinal and taking the lead at 17:45 after a jump shot by Alex Jarrell. The Waves were up 6-5. Jarrell followed with another shot in the paint and teammate Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) shot from beyond-the-arc put Pepperdine up by four at 11-7 with 15:05 remaining.
Stanford tied the score at 11-11 with a layup by Jeanette Pohlen, but Jarrell answered back with another layup and the Waves were back on top at 13-11 with 13:14 on the clock.
Kayla Pederson's layup at 12:27 started a 30-3 Cardinal scoring run ending with 4:02 on the clock and a layup by Taylor Snider. Stanford led at 42-18.
A series of foul shots for both teams and a 3-point shot by Lauren Bell (San Bruno, Calif./ Sacred Heart Cathedral) ended the half with the Waves trailing, 50-26.
Pederson opened the second half with a shot from beyond-the-arc followed by a jump shot by Ayim with 17:35 on the clock and Stanford leading 53-28.
With 18:39 remaining in the second half Rosalyn Gold-Onwude made two free throws and a jump shot to start a 23-7 Cardinal scoring run ending at 12:51 with a 3-pointer by J.J. Hones. Pepperdine trailed 76-46. Kelsey Patrick (Mukileto, Wash./Kamiak HS) shot a 3-pointer at 17:49 to help break the run.
Baskets were traded by both teams until Pederson's bucket in the paint followed by a shot from beyond-the-arc with 9:39 remaining in the game. Stanford led 83-40.
Cooney-WIlliams made a jump shot at 8:51.Pohlen responded with a 3-pointer for the Cardinal followed by a 12-3 Stanford scoring run ending with 5:16 on the clock and the Pepperdine trailing at 95-45.
A series of free throws and a shot in the paint by Keyah Shealy (Englewood, Col./Regis Jesuit HS) put the Waves at 95-45 with 3:10 left on the clock.
Stanford shot two jumpers in the final two minutes to give the Cardinal the victory at 99-50.
