Pepperdine Seizes a 83-68 Victory at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – Pepperdine started and finished strong, collecting an 83-68 season-opening victory against UC Davis Friday night at The Pavilion. The young Waves (1-0) got strong production from its roster as seven players scored at least two points and nine saw action against the Aggies (0-1).
Four Waves reached double-digit scoring and the team shot at a .510 (26-51) from the field and made 10-of-19 (.556) from beyond the arc. Five Pepperdine shooters connected from 3-point range.
“God gets all the glory tonight,” Pepperdine head coach Julie Rousseau said. “Our young women were prepared mentally and physically and played together as one. We had 20 assists on 26 makes. That is a great example of team basketball.”
Robie Mayberry (San Leandro, Calif./Bishop O’Dowd HS) scored a game-high 22 points and was in a zone, converting on 7-of-9 from the floor, 2-for-3 from 3-point range and connected on all six free throws to go along with five rebounds, three assists and three steals in 24 minutes. Mayberry battled foul trouble for most of the second half and collected her fourth with nearly nine minutes left in the second half.
Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) shattered her career-high in scoring with 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting with three 3-pointers to go along with five assists, while Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) had 15 points, five rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals. Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) added 11 points with three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
UC Davis made it a game early in the second, closing to one point, 39-40 with 16:40 left on a pair of free throws. Pepperdine responded and built and preserved a two possession lead that lasted for the final 11:51 of regulation. The Waves built their first double-digit lead of the half on a steal and lay-up by Shoustari with 5:30 to go.
Pepperdine dished a remarkable 20 assists, led by six from Cooney-Williams and collected 13 steals, with three apiece from Mayberry and Shoustari. The Waves scored a whopping 30 points off 28 Aggie turnovers and held UC Davis to .340 (18-53) shooting. The Aggies managed just eight field goals in the second half. The home team kept it close by connecting on .771 (27-35) from the free throw line.
From the opening tip-off, Pepperdine sizzled offensively and built a 25-9 lead on a layup by Kelsey Brockway (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) with 10:18 remaining in the opening half. Davis roared back and closed the half on a 25-9 run and trailed by two, 36-34 at the intermission. The Waves were shooting at a .600 pace midway through the period but struggled with turnovers down the stretch. Mayberry led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 16 points.
Sydnee Fipps paced the Aggies with 19 points, while Idit Oryon added 12.
