MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine women's basketball opened up the 2011-12 season with an exhibition victory over Westmont 78-54 at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves were led by seniors Lauren Bell and Jazmine Jackson as they each netted 18 points. Fellow senior Skye Barnett led the way with 13 rebounds as the Waves got some game-style basketball under their belts.

The Waves got out to a fast start with an 11-4 score less than five minutes into the game thanks to eight quick points by Bell (San Bruno, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Academy), who was celebrating her 21st birthday tonight. The Warriors cut the Waves' lead to five at the 13:05 mark in the first half, but a three-pointer by sophomore Robie Mayberry (San Leandro, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) and layups by junior Shay Cooney Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) and Bell extended the lead to 12. A three-pointer by Jackson (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral HS) at the 11:06 mark put the Waves up 23-8. The Waves would continue to match a double-digit lead throughout the first half, although the Warriors would close the deficit to eight, making the score 28-20 at the 3:52 mark. The Waves would settle in through the final few minutes of play, extending the lead to 22 at the half, capped off by freshman Grace Leah Baughn (Norcross, Ga./Wesleyan School)'s deep three-pointer at the buzzer to put the score at 44-22 Waves.

At the half the Waves were led by Bell with 18 points, including four-of-six shooting from behind the arc. She also dealt four assists in the half, while Barnett led the Waves on the glass with eight rebounds.

Jackson started off the Waves scoring in the second half, finishing two layups to put the Waves up 24 at 48-24. The Waves' signature pressure defense forced a Warriors' turnover at the 11:08 mark and junior Kelsey Patrick (Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak HS) put away a layup to give the Waves a 25 point lead. The Waves forced five turnovers in the next five minutes of play and pushed their lead, which had fallen to 18 at one point, back up to 26 at 71-45 off four free throws from Katie Menton (Coarsegold, Calif./Yosemite HS) and a layup by Barnett. The biggest lead of the evening, 28 points, came at the 4:27 mark off an Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) jumper that put the score at 73-45. The Waves would finish off with a free throw by Baughn with four seconds left in the game to put the final score at 78-54.

The Waves generated 23 turnovers in the game and put away 27 points on the night off turnovers. Individually Menton and Bell led the way with three steals apiece. Bell scored all of her 18 points of the night in a big first half effort. Jackson netted seven of her 18 points in the second half.

True freshmen Baughn, Shoushtari and forward/center Tessa Emerson (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) saw their first collegiate action in the exhibition. All three scored in the game, with Baughn and Shoushtari scoring four and Emerson adding three points, one block and seven rebounds.

The Waves are set to open the regular season on Sunday, November 13 at 1 p.m. PT as they take on power Tennessee in Knoxville.
