SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team pulled within two points under the two minute mark, but couldn't come all the way back Saturday afternoon, falling 67-61 at Santa Clara in their regular-season finale.

Pepperdine's best challenge of the day came with 8:56 to play in the game when Amanda Lovely (Palo Alto, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) and Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) knocked down threes to pull the Waves within one, 51-50. Nici Gilday answered Shoushtari's 3-pointer with a triple for the Broncos, as the teams would continue to trade baskets over the next several minutes.

The Waves kept it close, pulling to within two at the 2:11 mark, but Santa Clara got back-to-back baskets from Gilday to put the home team back up by six, 65-59 with just over a minute to play. Gilday hit a pair of foul shots down the stretch to keep Pepperdine at bay the rest of the way.

Shoushtari led the way for the Waves in the game, scoring 21 points, and was only topped by Gilday, who poured in 22 points to lead Santa Clara. Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) also added a double-double for Pepperdine, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds.

The Waves set the tempo early on in the game, leading for most of the opening 10 minutes behind seven quick points from Shoushtari. The Broncos would use a 10-0 run to grab a 20-12 lead at the 7:49 mark, however, and would eventually take a 33-25 lead into the half.

The Waves didn't hit a field goal for over nine minutes after taking an 11-8 lead in the first half, but got seven free throws over that stretch to pull within three at 22-19. An 11-6 run heading into the break gave Santa Clara an eight-point halftime advantage.

Shoushtari led the way in the opening period with nine points, as the Waves shot just 22 percent, but got 10 points at the foul line. Santa Clara owned an 18-8 points in the paint advantage and got 12 points from its bench to grab the early lead.

The Waves cut it to a four-point game twice in the early going of the second  half, getting four straight free throws out of the gate and then back-to-back layups from Kelsey Brockway (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and Grace Leah Baughn (Norcross, Ga./Wesleyan School).

Pepperdine ended the day going 18-for-26 at the free throw line, but shot just 30 percent from the field for the game. Santa Clara shot 26 of 59 (44 percent) from the field and finished with a 25-12 bench scoring advantage. The Waves had 19 offensive rebounds.

Pepperdine closes the regular season 5-24 overall, 1-17 WCC and Santa Clara moves to 10-19, 6-11 WCC. The WCC tournament opens March 6 in Las Vegas. Tournament seedings and matchups will be released following the completion of conference play.
