Pepperdine Falls 67-57 at San Francisco in WCC Play

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Pepperdine played its final regular season road game and dropped a 67-57 decision at San Francisco in West Coast Conference action Thursday night at War Memorial Gym. The Waves (4-22, 1-14 WCC) settle for a split in the regular season series against the Dons (11-17, 4-11 WCC).
It was a good night for Waves named Kelsey. Kelsey Patrick (Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak HS) turned in her second career double-double with an 13-point, 13 rebound effort. The 13 rebounds were a career-high for the senior and the most by a Wave this season. Kelsey Brockway (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) led the way for the Waves offensively with a career-high 13 points, nine coming in the first half to go along with four rebounds.
Grace Leah Baugn (Norcrosse, Ga/Wesleyan School) matched a career-high with nine points and Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) chipped in eight points.
Pepperdine jumped out to a 13-4 lead, but USF roared back an used a 8-1 lead over the final two minutes of the opening period to take a 29-27 lead at the intermission. The Dons went just 2-of-12 from the floor to start the contest, but went 9-of-22 the rest of the way.
Brockway led the Waves with nine points and four rebounds in the first half, while Richardson added six points and four boards. Pepperdine did out-rebound the Dons by a 24-22 margin. USF’s Mel Khlok led all scorers with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes.
San Francisco pushed its margin to 14 in the second half 51-37, with 6:27 remaining in regulation. The Waves made a push and cut the lead to single-digits with 3:51 remaining on a pair of free throws by Amanda Lovely (Palo Alto, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS). The Waves could not cut it to a two possession game and the Dons found an answer each time Pepperdine challenged.
Khlok finished with a game-high 23 points, while Bailey Barbour added 11 points and six rebounds for the Dons.
Pepperdine wraps up the 2012-13 regular season Saturday, March 2 when it welcomes Saint Mary’s to Malibu for a matinee. Tip-off against the Gaels is set for 2:00 p.m. in a game featuring live video streaming via WaveCasts. The Waves will honor its seniors – Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) and Kelsey Patrick in a special pregame ceremony.
