Women's Hoops' Comeback Falls Short on Senior Day
Feb. 25, 2012
The Waves (13-14 overall, 8-8 West Coast Conference) trailed by 11 with 6:40 to play but had a couple of chances to tie or take the lead down the stretch against the Gaels (20-9, 11-5).
Senior guard Katie Menton (Coarsegold, Calif./Yosemite HS) led all scorers with 17 points, while senior guard Lauren Bell (San Bruno, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) had 11 points and nine rebounds and senior forward Skye Barnett (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola HS) added 10 points.
Though the Waves held the Gaels to 34.7% shooting and forced 20 turnovers, Pepperdine shot just 26.4% and made 18 turnovers of its own. Uncharacteristically, the Waves didn't win the points-off-turnovers battle, with the Gaels holding a 17-8 edge.
Saint Mary's biggest lead came at 55-44 with 6:40 to play. Still down 57-48 with 3 1/2 minutes left, the Waves went on a 7-0 run thanks to a basket by Barnett at 3:15, a free throw by Bell at 1:50, two free throws by Barnett at 1:23 and two free throws by senior guard Jazmine Jackson (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) at 1:13.
The Gaels, in the meantime, were in the process of missing the front end of three one-and-ones. But in a two-point game the Waves were unable to capitalize on the final two, and Saint Mary's eventually began making some of its free throws in the final minute.
Menton banked in a three-pointer with 1.3 seconds left to make the score 62-60. Jackie Nared of the Gaels made her first free throw with 0.3 seconds left, but her second was waved off due to a lane violation, giving Pepperdine one last chance.
Bell threw the inbounds pass all the way down the court to junior guard Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS), but her hurried three-point attempt wasn't able to connect.
Jasmine Smith scored 14 points and Hayley Hendricksen had 12 for the Gaels.
The Waves' four seniors - Barnett, Bell, Jackson and Menton - were honored before the game.
The Waves are the #5 seed at the upcoming WCC Basketball Championships, which will be held at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Pepperdine will play on Thursday (March 1) at 12 p.m. in a second-round game against the winner of the #8-#9 game between San Francisco and Loyola Marymount. All four of Thursday's games will be televised by BYUtv.
