MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team executed an exciting second-half comeback to defeat rival Loyola Marymount 65-61 on Thursday evening at Firestone Fieldhouse. The win is the seventh-straight victory for the Waves over the Lions and gives Pepperdine a 9.5 to 5.5 advantage in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup standings.

After being down 39-29 at the half, the Waves (13-13, 7-7) came out firing in the second half, shooting 45.7 percent from the field and outscoring the Lions (7-21, 3-13) 36-22 to pull out the victory. The Waves finished with a balanced scoring attack, with four seniors finishing in double-figures. Guard Jazmine Jackson (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) led Pepperdine scorers with 16, as Skye Barnett (Albuqerque, N.M./Cibola HS) finished with 14 and Lauren Bell (San Bruno, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral HS) and Katie Menton (Coarsegold, Calif./Yosemite HS) netted 12 and 11, respectively.

In the first half, the Waves spent most of their time playing catch up, as the Lions took an early 4-2 lead at the 18:52 mark and would continue to build on it. They would go on a 9-3 run starting at the 7 minute mark and running through the 3:23 mark to take the largest lead of the day, 31-17.

With 1:27 left in the half and down 13, Bell would knock down a three-pointer to put the game at 39-29, going into halftime. At the half, Bell led the Waves with nine points.

In the second half, the Waves started to carve into the Lions' lead at the 14:53 mark, when Barnett single-handedly carried them on a 6-2 run to put the Waves within six, 46-40 with 13:37 to go.

With 9:29 left and the Waves down six, Menton made a great steal on the defensive end and finished with a layup to pull the Waves to within four, 53-49. The Waves would force another Lion turnover on the next possession and Bell would complete a three-point play to pull to within one, 53-52.

The Lions would sink a free throw to put the score at 54-52, but a layup by T'Keyah Shealy (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit HS) would tie things up, 54-54 with 8:26 to play.

The Waves and Lions would continue to trade baskets, but a three-pointer by Menton with 5:04 to play would put the Waves up for good. Jackson would extend the lead to 63-58 with a jumper at the 3:51 mark.

The Lions' leading scorer Alex Cowling, who finished with 26 points, would pull the Lions to within two, 63-61, but that would be as close as they would get.

A jumper by Jackson with 25 seconds left would put the score at 65-61 and the Waves played tough defense to keep the Lions from scoring again. Leading scorer Jackson would come away with 10 of her points in the second half, as would Barnett.

The Waves will finish the regular season with a final home game for seniors Barnett, Bell, Jackson and Menton on Saturday, Feb. 25 as the Waves host Saint Mary's at 2 p.m. PT.
