MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine went cold at the worst possible time and Loyola Marymount took advantage in a 58-56 West Coast Conference loss Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse in a Wells Fargo PCH Cup battle. The Waves (4-20, 1-12 WCC) led for most of the night, but the Lions (10-16, 4-9 WCC) seized control late in collecting their first road triumph of the 2012-13 season.

Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) scored a team-high 13 points with four rebounds and three steals, while fellow senior Kelsey Patrick (Muliteo, Wash./Kamiak HS) added nine points and matched a career-high with 12 rebounds. Kelsey Brockway (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) matched her career scoring high with 10 points for the second straight game. Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) also enjoyed a solid night with nine points and established career highs with seven rebounds and six assists.

Pepperdine held a 56-47 lead with 5:51 remaining in regulation after a pair of Patrick free throws. Those would be the last points the Waves scored in the contest. The Lions went on an 11-0 run in the final 5:07 and Pepperdine missed its last seven field goal attempts. LMU took the lead for good at the 1:57 mark on a layup from Ashley Lovett.

Neither team shot the ball well, as Pepperdine converted on .319 (22-69) from the floor, while the Lions were even colder at .315 (17-54). The difference came at the foul line as LMU connected on 22-of-30 (.733) while the Waves only attempted eight free throws, making seven.

Pepperdine played inspired early, turning in one of its most complete halves of the season. The Waves shot .412 (14-34) from the floor and out-rebounded the Lions 26-19. Pepperdine outscored LMU 12-4 in the paint and limited the Lions to a .226 (7-31) rate from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

Brockway led the Waves with eight points and five rebounds, while Patrick added five points and six rebounds. Wallace dished out a career-high five assists in the first half and Pepperdine had 12 assists on its 14 buckets in the opening period.

Hazel Ramirez scored a game-high 18 points, while Alex Cowling added 10 points for the Lions. With the victory, LMU completes the regular season series sweep for the first time since 2007.

Pepperdine returns to WCC action Saturday, Feb. 23 when it travels to the Bay Area to take on Santa Clara. Tip-off against the Broncos is set for 2:00 p.m. from the Leavey Event Center in a game featuring a live audio WaveCast.
