LOS ANGELES- With a balanced scoring attack the Pepperdine women's basketball team defeated rival Loyola Marymount 68-59 on Monday evening at Gersten Pavilion. Four Waves scored in double figures, led by senior guards Lauren Bell and Jazmine Jackson with 15 points apiece.

Bell's (San Bruno, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) 15 points makes her the 20th member of the Pepperdine 1,000 career points club, as she currently has 1,002 career points. She joins current teammates Katie Menton (Coarsegold, Calif./Yosemite HS) and Jackson (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) on that prestigious list.

"It is exciting. It is definitely an accomplishment to make it this far and to be one of the few Waves to do so," Bell said of her 1,000 point accomplishment.

On the victory, Bell added, "This is another great win for us. We needed another one after our BYU win so we are just trying to keep the energy going and keep pushing forward."

The Waves (12-10, 7-4 WCC) shot 43.1 percent from the field and forced the Lions (7-16, 3-8 WCC) into 15 turnovers on 10 team steals.

The win gives the Waves 1.5 points in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup, an annual competition between rivals Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount in head-to-head competition. The Waves have won the cup in the first two years of its existence and now lead the Lions 8.5 to 5.5.

Both teams started off slow on the offensive side, only scoring a combined six points in the first 5:49 of the first half.

A three-pointer by Katie Menton (Coarsegold, Calif./Yosemite HS) at the 10:57 mark gave the Waves their first lead of the day, 7-6. Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) earned a steal on the defensive end. And the Waves converted a free throw followed by a layup from Kelsey Patrick at the 9:58 mark to take a 10-6 lead.

The Lions would make a run back to take a 11-10 lead, but Bell would sink a three-pointer at the 7:22 mark to give the Waves a 13-11 lead.

A layup by Jade McNorton (Boise, Idaho/Centennial HS) and a steal on the defensive end and a fast break layup by Jackson on two consecutive possessions extended the Waves lead to 17-11 with 6:35 left in the half. The Waves would extend their lead further, 22-11 on a three-pointer by Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS). The Waves would carry the 15-0 run down to the 4:44 mark with a 25-11 lead.

The Lions would close out the half on an 8-2 run, but the Waves would still hold an eight-point lead, 27-19 at the half.

Menton led the Waves at the half with six points, but three additional Waves in Bell, Jackson and McNorton each had five at the break. The Waves bench came up with 11 points in the half compared with the Lions' three.

After trading baskets to begin the half, the Waves would push their lead to 12, in part because of steal and putback from Barnett and two free throws by Bell at the 17:18 mark.

The Waves continued to hold an eight to 10 point lead through majority of the second half.

At the 8:46 mark a three-pointer punctuated a 5-0 run by the Lions to cut the Waves lead down to just seven, 48-41. The Waves would answer with a 9-2 run of their own through the 3:24 mark to push ahead 60-47.

The Waves kept the lead down the stretch and at the final buzzer the score was set at 68-59, Pepperdine.

The Waves will return to Firestone Fieldhouse to host San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. PT. The game is the Waves annual breast cancer awareness Pink game, with all ticket revenue being donated to Play 4Kay, a nation-wide initiative of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The first 100 fans will get free pink pom poms and the first 200 fans will receive free pink t-shirts.
