Feb. 2, 2013
SPOKANE, Wash. – Pepperdine concluded its Pacific Northwest road swing with a 81-52 loss to defending West Coast Conference Champion Gonzaga Saturday afternoon in front of a sold out crowd of 6,000 at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The Waves (4-16, 1-8 WCC) simply could not slow down the Bulldogs (18-5, 8-1 WCC) in the second meeting between the two teams in a nine-day span.
Three Waves – Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS), Amanda Lovely (Palo Alto, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) and Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) each chipped in 10 points. Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) added nine points and a team-high three assists off the bench.
Pepperdine started the game on the wrong end of a 19-5 Gonzaga run and the Waves never seriously threatened. The Zags led 38-25 at the break and outscored the Waves 43-27 after the intermission.
It was a struggle to score for the Waves, who connected on just .296 (16-54) from the field and .333 (5-15) from long distance. Gonzaga shot lights out, hitting at a .452 (28-62) clip and made half of their 24 3-point attempts. The Bulldogs dominated on the glass once again and held a 48-28 advantage, 17-9 on the offensive glass.
Haiden Palmer led three Bulldogs in double-digit scoring with 17 points, four rebounds and five assists. Keani Albanez had 12 points off the bench. The Zags recorded a whopping 23 assists on 28 field goals and everyone in the starting lineup contributed at least three helpers. The starting unit combined for 21 assists and just five turnovers.
Pepperdine returns to action when it welcomes Portland Saturday, February 9. Game time against the Pilots is set for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off in a game featuring live streaming video via WaveCasts.
