Pepperdine Falls to San Diego 79-61 in WCC Play

Patrick (Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak HS) made half of her 14 field goals and pulled down five rebounds with three assists and a steal in 34 minutes. It is the second time in three games Patrick has matched her career-high after accomplishing the feat at Saint Mary’s Jan. 19.
Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) added 11 points for Pepperdine, while Jade McNorton (Boise, Idaho/Centennial HS) chipped in 10 points in 15 minutes off the bench. Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) and Amanda Lovely (Palo Alto, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) each had seven points for Pepperdine as the Wave reserves outscored the Torero bench 26-14.
Pepperdine started strong and led 12-5 at the 15:07 mark on a three-point play by McNorton. After three more lead changes, the Toreros took a 21-20 lead on a lay-up by Katelyn McDaniel with 9:22 remaining, keying off a 12-5 burst. USD dominated on the low block and out-rebounded the Waves 23-9.
In a half full of runs, San Diego closed the opening 20 minutes on a 6-0 run to take a 44-33 edge at the break. The Toreros sizzled shooting at a .607 (17-28) rate and made 14 of their last 20 attempts from the field. McDaniel led all scorers with 12 points and seven rebounds in the first half for the Toreros, while Patrick scored nine points to lead the Waves.
San Diego came out of the intermission on a 10-0 run and never looked back, leading by as many as 25 with 7:42 remaining.
Remarkably San Diego shot better from the field .582 (32-55) than at the foul line where it converted on just .522 (12-23). The Toreros dominated the rebounding battle 43-21, 17-11 on the offensive glass. The Waves shot .390 (23-59) from the floor and made 4-of-10 from 3-point range.
McDaniel led three San Diego players in double-digit scoring with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Klara Wischer added 17 points and seven rebounds.
Pepperdine travels to the Pacific Northwest for a pair of WCC battles beginning Thursday, January 31 in Portland. Tip-off against the Pilots is set for 7:00 p.m. from the Chiles Center in a game featuring a live audio broadcast via WaveCasts.
