Waves Edged Out by USC at the Buzzer, 3-2

MALIBU, Calif. – With a game winning goal by USC on the buzzer the Pepperdine men’s water polo team had to settle for second place in the MPSF Championships Sunday evening, at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

An intensely fought match by both teams saw the score at 0-0 in the first period.  With 2:25 on the clock in the second quarter Adam Hewko (Irvine, Calif./Servite HS) scored the first goal of the game to give the Waves a 1-0 lead. Peter Artukovich answered back with a shot in the cage for USC at 1:49 to tie the match 1-1.

Andrew Milcovich (Walnut Creek, Calif./ De La Salle HS) scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity to give the lead back to the Waves at 2-1, with 4:03 remaining in the third period.

Strong defensive play by both goalkeepers kept the scoring low. The fourth period went without a goal until there was 1:23 remaining in the match and Justin Rappel scored for USC to tie the score 2-2. The match seemed destined for overtime when Hewko was ejected with 5 seconds on the clock and the Trojans scored on a man-up opportunity as the buzzer sounded.

USC clinched a berth for the NCAA final four for winning the tournament. An at-large team is to be selected tonight by an NCAA appointed committee. Both Stanford and Pepperdine are expected to vie for the spot.
