Waves Too Much for 49ers on Senior Day
Nov. 20, 2005
MALIBU, Calif. - Jesse Smith's second goal of the day at the 5:15 mark of the second period during Pepperdine's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) tilt against Long Beach State Sunday afternoon proved to be the game-winner as the Waves ended the 2005 regular-season with an 11-4 victory at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool in Malibu, Calif.
Pepperdine (17-9, 3-5 MPSF) got out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter as Smith scored less than a minute into the contest and Matt MacDonell found the back of the net at the 2:03 mark, while senior Matt Hahn rounded out the period's scoring with a man-advantage goal with 1:25 remaining.
Long Beach State (17-15, 1-7 MPSF) would find itself trailing 5-0 before recording its first goal of the game as Satoshi Sakata found the back of the net in transition for the 49ers.
Smith would net his third, and final, goal of the day with a man-advantage at the 2:12 mark of the second frame. The goal was the senior's 55th of the season, tying the three-time All-American's single season record. The Waves would hold a 7-3 edge at the half.
Pepperdine would score four of the five goals in the second half, never letting the 49ers back into the game as the Waves recorded their second consecutive victory of the weekend.
The Waves will open MPSF tournament play next weekend as the No. 6 seed and will face either Stanford or Cal based on other results from this weekend's action. The tournament will be contested at USC beginning Friday morning.
