J.P. MacDonell Leads Waves Over Irvine, 12-9


 
 

MALIBU, Calif. – Junior J.P. MacDonell scored a season-high five goals to lead the Waves to victory over UC Irvine, 12-9, on Sunday afternoon at the Raleigh-Runnels Memorial Pool.

 

MacDonell (Redwood City, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) was the match high-scorer with Irvine’s Greg Enloe leading the Anteater offense with three goals. Pepperdine (17-6, 4-2) goalkeeper John Hahn had 13 saves while Irvine’s Matt Johnson was responsible for seven saves. The Waves were 3-for-6 on extra man opportunities while the Anteaters went 4-for-6.

 

The Waves got into a scoring battle in the first period with the Anteaters. Both team traded goals until the final three minutes of the period when Irvine’s Greg Enloe and James Frank scored back-to-back goals to give the Anteaters a two-point lead going into the second period, 5-3. Adam Hewko (Irvine, Calif./Servite HS) and Greg Enloeo (UCI) each scored twice in the first period.

 

Pepperdine went on a 4-0 scoring run in the second quarter to end the half up by two goals, 7-5. Back-to-back goals by the MacDonell brothers with J.P. scoring at 4:27 and Mat (Redwood City, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) shooting the shot that tied the match at 3:02 started the Waves onslaught.

Goals Clayton Snyder (Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos/HS) at 2:20 and Matt Digges (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) at 1:31 gave the Waves a lead going into the third period.

 

Irvine outscored Pepperdine 3-to-2 in the third period with Jesse Hatch (UCI) scoring two goals for the Anteaters and Thomas Kruip scoring one. J.P. MacDonell scored both goals for the Waves, 8-9.

 

Fourth period started with Irvine taking advantage of a 6-on-5 opportunity with a goal by James Frank at 5:52, 9-9. Grant Miller (LaVerne, Calif./LaVerne HS) responded with a shot in the cage at 6:17 with a left-handed goal due to an injured right hand to give the Waves the lead once again, 10-9. Brett Auer (Newport Beach, Calif./ Newport Beach HS) and J.P. MacDonell scored the final goals of the game to give Pepperdine the win.

 

Next up for Pepperdine is UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Nov. 16, at UCSB, at 12 p.m.
