Pepperdine Comeback Falls Short in 8-6 Loss to Stanford
Oct. 21, 2006
MALIBU, Calif. - For the second time in the past six days, the Pepperdine water polo team suffered a defeat by Stanford. In Saturday's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) opener for the Waves, the Cardinal held off a late Pepperdine surge for the 8-6 victory at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
Pepperdine (10-12, 0-1 MPSF) received a pair of goals from Matt Welde (Devon, Penn.) and Clayton Snyder (Seal Beach, Calif.). Jason Langten (Irvine, Calif.) and Brett Auer (Newport Beach, Calif.) each added a score for the Waves in the loss.
Michael Bury, Drac Wigo and Tyler Drake scored twice each to lead Stanford (10-5, 2-1 MPSF).
The Cardinal picked up four goals in the first period - two by Bury - while Welde's fifth score of the season accounted for the only offense by Pepperdine in the opening frame.
Auer would score his 20th of the season early in the second period to cut the deficit to two, 4-2, but scores by Drake and Ryan McCarthy would push the visitor's lead to four, 6-2, at the half.
Pepperdine's offense picked up the pace in the second half as Snyder recorded both his goals on the day and Welde chipped in his second of the day to close the gap to 7-5 heading into the final eight minutes of regulation.
Will Hindle-Katel pushed the Cardinal back up by three, 8-5, with Stanford's second 6-on-5 goal of the afternoon with seven minutes remaining. Langten kept the Waves' comeback hopes alive with a goal at the 2:51 mark, but it would be the final score for either team as Pepperdine fell to 3-2 at home this season.
The Waves will return to action Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. (PT) when they host UC Irvine in conference action. Pepperdine downed the Anteaters, 12-11, in overtime to claim second at last weekend's SoCal Tournament.
