Oct. 18, 2005
MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 7-ranked Pepperdine water polo team will host UC San Diego Thursday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool at 2 p.m. (PT). Thursday's contest is the fourth meeting of the year for the two teams, including in last Sunday's fifth-place game at the NorCal Open.
Pepperdine (13-5, 1-1 MPSF) has put together a solid October going 6-2, including a 5-4 victory over top-ranked USC on the 1st. The Waves are coming off a fifth-place finish at last weekend's NorCal Open and will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts No. 5 UC San Diego. Pepperdine claimed a 12-7 victory just two days ago and lead the season series, 2-1.
The Waves' five losses this season have been by a combined six goals. Pepperdine is led in scoring by senior Jesse Smith's 34 goals, while sophomores Adam Hewko and Grant Miller have chipped in 30 each. On the year, Pepperdine is outscoring its opponents by a 161-119 margin, with four wins coming by five or more goals.
Pepperdine is 5-1 at home this season.
Thursday's tilt will be the lone game for Pepperdine this week as the team will head back north nest weekend for a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) games at Cal and at Stanford.
