Oct. 15, 2005
MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 5-ranked Pepperdine men's water polo team held off a late charge by UC Davis to win its opening game, 11-8, at the NorCal Tournament Saturday morning in Berkeley, Calif., but was unable to overcome UCLA in the second contest of the day, falling by an 8-7 count.
The Waves (11-5) held a two-goal lead, 5-3, on UC Davis after the first half of play and kicked the offense into overdrive in the third stanza netting five goals for the 10-5 lead after 21 minutes of play. Davis would outscore Pepperdine by a 4-1 margin in the final frame but the come back was too little, too late as Pepperdine moved on in the winner's bracket.
Adam Hewko recorded his 23rd and 24th goals of the season in the victory to lead seven Waves in scoring.
In the nightcap, the Waves held a slim 2-1 lead over UCLA after the opening seven minutes of play only to give up three goals in the second period and trail 4-3 at the half. The Bruins matched Pepperdine goal-for-goal in the second half to pull out the 8-7 victory and drop the Waves into the consolation bracket.
Pepperdine received two goals each from Grant Miller, Matt Digges and Jesse Smith and one from Nick Corjon in the loss.
Pepperdine's five losses have come by a total of six points this season.
The Waves will return to action Sunday morning at 8 a.m. at the Spieker Aquatics Center against either Cal or Loyola Marymount.
