Balanced Pepperdine Attack Falls Short in 9-8 Loss

Malibu, Calif. - The No. 13th-ranked Pepperdine water polo team fought back from a 9-5 deficit Friday night but could not complete the valiant come-back attempt as the Waves dropped their fifth consecutive game with a 9-8 loss to UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif.
Jason Langten (Irvine), Doug Mann (Coronado, Calif.), Nick Cojon (La Verne, Calif.) and Clayton Snyder (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored twice each, accounting for Pepperdine's (4-8) eight goals.
Irvine (5-8) received four goals from Colin Mello, three from Kyle Baxter and two from Cole Bielskis in the victory.
Pepperdine took a 1-0 lead in the game as Langten scored his 13th goal of the season at the 6:14 mark of the first period. Following the early strike, UC Irvine scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead. Late in the second period, Corjon pulled the Waves within two, 4-2, but a Baxter goal with 0:50 remaining in the period gave the Anteaters a 5-2 edge at the half.
Mann recorded the only two scores of the third stanza to bring Pepperdine back within one, 5-4. Irvine would build its lead back up to four, 9-5, with 3:13 remaining in the game when Snyder started the Waves' comeback attempt. Corjon brought the score to 9-7 with his fifth goal of the season at the 1:07 mark and Langten added a goal with 0:45 remaining but time ran out on Pepperdine in the end.
The Waves will face Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara tomorrow afternoon in the Long Beach Mini before hosting UC Davis, Bucknell and Pomona on Sunday.
