Waves Fall to UC Davis, 10-9, in NorCal Opener

MALIBU, Calif. - The eighth-ranked Pepperdine men's water polo team fell to No. 6 UC Davis, 10-9, in the Waves first game of the NorCal Tournament in Stanford, Calif. The loss is the third consecutive for Pepperdine which falls to 3-3 on the year.
Freshman JP MacDonell recorded his third hat trick of the season, while Jason Langten scored three goals for the second time this season. Matt Welde, Matt Lee and Jamie Wolff each scored once.
The Waves were opportunistic in taking a 4-2 lead in the first period. Langten scored the first goal of the day on a penalty shot at the 5:23 mark. After UC Davis tied the contest at one, the Waves took a 4-1 lead off three 6-on-5 goals. The Aggies scored the final goal of the frame.
UC Davis scored the only three goals of the second period as part of a 6-0 run that put the Ags up by a 7-4 margin.
Following MacDonell and Langten goals in the third, Pepperdine pulled within one, 7-6. UC Davis would score the final goal of the quarter and the first of the final stanza to take a four-point, 10-6 lead.
With 5:45 remaining in the game, Pepperdine's Welde started the Waves' final run. At the 3:48 mark, MacDonell recorded his final goal of the day and pulled Pepperdine within two, 10-8. With less than a minute remaining in the game, Langten completed his hat trick but it would serve as the final goal for Pepperdine.
