Although they are not in the same conference when it comes to men's water polo, there will be no love lost this weekend when the sixth-ranked Waves travel to No. 9 Loyola Marymount on Saturday at noon in the first of a two-game season series between the cross-town rivals.
Pepperdine (3-1) opened the season with three victories before falling, 12-11, in sudden death overtime to tournament host UC San Diego at last weekend's Triton Invitational. The Lions (3-1) earned a split in pool play, falling to Pacific, at the same tournament and went 2-0 on Sunday leading up to this weekend's contest.
Freshman JP MacDonell leads the Waves in scoring with nine in four games, while sophomore Matt Lee is second on the team in goals with seven and in assists with four. Junior Matt Welde recorded a team-leading eight assists last weekend, while freshman Travis Stachowski recorded a team-best 20 saves in the cage.
This weekend's competition will serve as a final tune-up before Pepperdine heads to Stanford, Calif. to compete in the NorCal Tournament. The Waves will be the tournament's sixth seed.
