Sept. 3, 2006
MALIBU, Calif. - Sixth-ranked Pepperdine doubled up Pacific, 14-7, to advance to the championship game of the Triton Invitational Sunday but fall to tournament host UC San Diego, 12-11, in sudden death overtime for second place.
Pepperdine's (3-1) defense was instrumental in the first game of the day. Senior Doug Mann would score the Waves' first goal against the Tigers and Tom Stricklen's goal at the 3:46 mark gave Pepperdine a 2-1 lead at the end of the opening eight minutes of play. Pacific would tie the game early in the second period but the first of two Matt Lee goals in the game put the Waves back on top for good, 3-2. Freshmen JP MacDonell and Clayton Snyder each scored twice in the third quarter as Pepperdine rolled into the championship game.
The Waves seemed to be well on their way to the tournament title after goals by Jason Langten, Lee and two from Stricklen put Pepperdine up 4-0 in the first period. UC San Diego rallied all the way back to tie the contest at 5-all late in the second quarter before a MacDonell goal reclaimed the lead for Pepperdine at 6-5. The Tritons took their first lead of the game in the third with three unanswered goals for an 8-6 advantage. Dorian Beaney's third goal of the season knotted the game at 8-8 at the 2:57 mark of the third period. Langten's third goal of the game came with just 4:20 remaining in the game and pushed the Waves up by one, 10-9. With less than a minute to go, UCSD evened the game, sending it into overtime. Pepperdine took an 11-10 lead on the second Clayton Snyder goal of the game but the Tritons would answer with just two seconds remaining in the first overtime.
Neither team scored in the second overtime.
UCSD completed its comeback with a goal at the 1:07 mark in the third extra frame.
The Waves will return to action on Sat., Sept. 9 when they travel to cross-town rival Loyola Marymount (3-1). The ball is scheduled to drop at Noon at the Burns Recreation and Aquatic Center.
