MALIBU, Calif. - Four members of the Pepperdine men's water polo team - Nicholas Candau, Luke Hewko, Austin Talleur and Bence Valics - have earned Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic honors, the league office announced today.

To qualify for MPSF All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average, be at least a sophomore academically and have competed in at least 50 percent of the team's games during the season.

Candau (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS), a redshirt freshman center and a pre-international business major, played in all 22 games and scored nine goals this past season.

Hewko (Irvine, Calif./Servite HS), a sophomore utility and an accounting major, led the Waves with 55 goals. He averaged 2.62 goals per game, which ranked fourth in the MPSF.

Talleur (Claremont, Calif./The Webb Schools), a redshirt freshman attacker and a pre-business administration major, played in 20 contests and scored four goals.

Valics (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Secondary), a senior goalie and an international business major, recorded 201 saves this past season. A four-year starter, he also earned MPSF All-Academic honors in 2011 and was an All-American honorable mention selection in 2012.

Pepperdine finished the 2013 season ranked ninth nationally. The Waves posted a 9-13 overall record and tied for seventh place in the MPSF at 1-7.
