MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine's men's water polo team fell 13-5 to No. 1 and top-seeded Cal Friday morning during first-round action at the MPSF Championships hosted by Stanford University.

The loss dropped the Waves' overall record to 9-16, while Cal improved to 22-2.

The Waves led 3-2 in the opening period, but the Golden Bears proved too resilient and ran off an 11-2 run the rest of the way.

Pepperdine sophomore Stephen Loomis (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) scored twice to lead the Waves. Ivan Rackov and Zach White each scored four times to lead California, while goalie Justin Parsons made seven saves. Freshman goalkeeper Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Secondary) also made seven stops for Pepperdine.

California will play the winner of Friday afternoon's Stanford-UC Irvine quarterfinal at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Pepperdine moves into the consolation bracket and will play the loser of Friday's Stanford-UC Irvine contest at 10 a.m. Saturday.
