Men's Water Polo: Pepperdine Falls to Pacific 10-7 in Second Round of MPSF Tournament
Nov. 24, 2012
LOS ANGELES – For the second straight day, Pepperdine led early but could not close, dropping a 10-7 decision to Pacific on day two of the 2012 MPSF Tournament at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium on the USC campus. The Waves (11-12) led 4-3 entering the third period, but the Tigers (13-11) outscored Pepperdine 7-3 after the intermission. Pepperdine will take on UC Santa Barbara Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the seventh place match. The Gauchos dropped a 14-11 decision to a surging Long Beach State team in Saturday’s opening game. Pacific will tackle the 49ers in the fifth place game at 11:30 a.m. “Towards the end we got in a little exclusion trouble and our offensive execution suffered due to foul trouble,” interim co-head coach Willo Rodriguez said. “We have faith that we will be able to regroup and give UCSB a battle tomorrow.” Pepperdine opened with a flourish, scoring three goals in the opening frame and added a fourth in the second for a 4-3 halftime lead. Pacific knotted the contest at 6-6 with three goals in the third. The Tigers finished strong with a four-goal outburst in the fourth and limited the Waves to just one score in the final period. Matthew DeTrane (Moraga, Calif./Diablo Valley CC) recorded a hat trick to lead the Waves offensively. Stephen Loomis (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) added a pair of goals for Pepperdine, while James Perry (Orinda, Calif/Miramonte HS) and Wesley Sherburne (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) also found the back of the net.
Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary) collected 11 saves for Pepperdine and limited the Tigers to just a single goal in the first period. 2012 MPSF Men’s Water Polo Tournament 1 2 3 4 FINAL SCORING: SAVES: RECORDS: |
