Pepperdine Drops Tough 11-9 Decision to Cal
Nov. 23, 2012
LOS ANGELES – Pepperdine led through three quarters, but could not hold off California in the fourth quarter, dropping a hotly-contested 11-9 decision in the opening round of the 2012 MPSF Men’s Water Polo Tournament Friday at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium. The Waves (11-11) rolled to a 4-1 lead after the first and took a 5-3 advantage at halftime against the Golden Bears (16-7).
Pepperdine now turns its attention to a Saturday showdown against Pacific. Match time versus the Tigers is set for 11:30 a.m. at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium. The Waves swept the regular season meetings against Pacific, winning 11-7 at the NorCal Tournament and in a 9-6 road triumph during league play.
Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West College) led the way offensively with his second straight hat trick, while Matthew DeTrane (Moraga, Calif./Diablo Valley CC) added a pair of goals for Pepperdine in his first match back after missing the last two matches with a hand injury.
Emotions boiled over in the fourth quarter as five players (three from Pepperdine) were issued flagrant misconducts. Both teams were awarded a pair of penalty shots in the frame and both converted on the pair. Due to a Pepperdine protest, the final 45 seconds of the contest was replayed with Cal leading 11-9, after the Stanford vs. Long Beach State contest. The Waves did not score during the replay.
Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary) collected 11 saves for Pepperdine and limited the Bears to just a single goal in the first period.
