Pepperdine Rides Valics and Madaras to Victory
Nov. 2, 2013
Valics (Eger Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Secondary) had a season high 20 saves while Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West College) put away five goals to lead the Waves (9-9, 1-3 MPSF) past the 49ers (17-7, 1-2 MPSF).
“Once we settled down on defense and went back into a zone, Bence really took over and did a great job for us in the cage,” Pepperdine Head Coach Terry Schroeder said. “They couldn’t score six on six from the outside and going down the stretch we had a good fourth quarter and he made some key saves which pretty much iced the game.”
Long Beach State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but a goal by senior Mike Tragitt (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) narrowed the lead to just one in the first. The teams would trade goals in the second quarter and the 49ers led 6-5 at halftime but were outscored by the Waves 5-2 in the second half.
Madaras now has 29 goals on the year that ranks second on the team. Luke Hewko (Irvine, Calif./Servite HS) continued his impressive season with a pair of goals giving him 53 for the season.
The Waves’ next match is at home against No. 2 Pacific on Friday, November 6. Match time against the Tigers is set for 3:00 p.m. in a match streamed live on PepperdineSports.com via WaveCasts.
