MALIBU, Calif. – No. 4 Pepperdine mounted a furious rally, but could not come all the way back against No. 6 Cal, dropping a 12-9 MPSF decision Friday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. The Waves (11-8, 3-3 MPSF) drop just their second home match of the season to the Golden Bears (11-7, 2-3 MPSF), who won their eighth straight meeting in the series.

“This was a situation where we simply dug ourselves too deep of a hole,” Pepperdine interim co-head coach Willo Rodriguez said. “We did not do as good of a job as we needed to on the power play and this is something that made us successful the last few weeks. Now we just have to focus on preparing for Long Beach State.”

Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West College) turned in a strong performance with a hat trick, including a pair of goals in the second quarter. Nick Cooper (Clayton, Calif./De La Salle HS) added a pair of scores for the Waves.

Pepperdine trailed 3-1 after the first period and Cal seemingly took control with a five goal outburst in the second to take an 8-4 lead at halftime. The Waves bounced back in the third, limiting the Bears to just one tally in the frame as they cut the deficit to two, 9-7, entering the fourth quarter. Pepperdine scored three unanswered goals in the period with two on the power play and one on a penalty shot.

Cal opened the fourth with back-to-back goals to take a 11-7 advantage with 5:25 remaining in regulation, but Pepperdine recovered with a pair of power play goals from Cooper and Spencer Hamby (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS). Then in the key play of the match, Madaras had a penalty shot with the score at 11-9 blocked by Cal goalie Jon Sibley and the Bears scored late to seal the contest.

Colin Smith led the way for Cal with a match-high five goals with a pair in the second and fourth quarters.

Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary) turned in a solid match with 13 saves. Sibley finished with six saves, all coming in the second half, for the Bears.

Pepperdine returns to MPSF action when it travels to Long Beach for a crucial road contest at No. 7 Long Beach State Thursday, November 8. Match time against the 49ers is set for 7:00 p.m.
